FIL the "Prima Donna"

When we purchased our home years ago, my FIL helped my husband buy our home, since he was finalizing a divorce/home payments with ex-wife and couldn't get approved for another mortgage. We set up a beautiful duplex apartment for FIL attached to our home. Over the years my husband has done better financially than anyone expected. In turn, he has paid his dad back (dad now lives in his apartment with us rent free, all utilities paid by us). My husband also helped his dad renovate his upstate home, which was large but mainly a handy man special when purchased to the tune of I can't so how many tens of thousands of dollars. Although widowed, what older person wouldn't wish to FIL's situation. A lovely apartment, free and clear, with son and DIL to help out, a magnificent home on a lake in pretty wooded community? Well, FIL, now hardly ever stays in his apartment. When he returns he is bored here. We must continue to maintain this apartment, even though he doesn't seem to have any interest in being here. After everything we did to make this place pleasant for him it's no longer needed but we must continue to keep it maintained and empty. Meanwhile I have a disabled son who could possibly live there one day. Oh, no! It must be kept vacant for whenever his highness stops here. My husband said we should sell our home and get something more suitable for our one family. I know what will happen if we do that--FIL will expect to be put up in our new home for as long as he wants in a bedroom in our house! No privacy for anyone. I am so disgusted with this sitution and hope it will change soon. It seems the more you give people the more they expect but the less they do in return!
