this is by far the most difficult forum to sign up for just to let you know between the 5 redundant robot questions that only a human could answer and the impossible to read security thing now I have to make a new topic to state the obvious I want to be able to talk and post to people feeling the same pain as I do with in laws. I love the site but the sign up process is over kill many i know would say forget it too much trouble.

Exactly. And that's why we don't have any spammers on the forums posting Viagra ads and photos of sexual acts; it's too many hoops to jump through for someone making pennies.

But, for those who REALLY want to discuss their in-laws issues, they make do. They do exactly what you did and they join a community of people who also jumped through the hoops, which means every member REALLY wants to join the discussion, not just post-and-run or spam-and-run. Call it "quality control."

In the end, the site doesn't make me any money and only costs me a few bucks every month, so it doesn't bother me how many or how few people are using it. As long as it's useful to a decent number of people, I'm fine with it.

I forgot to address this point specifically and I want to because there's a subtle beauty in how it works.

Newly registered forum members are the only people, other than Moderators, who can see the "New Users" forum. In fact, it's the ONLY forum they can see. Here's the breakdown of what the groups of people can/can't see and post to...

Moderators
View: Everything
Post: Everything

Non-Registered Users (Public View)
View: News and Announcements, Suggestion Box, Non-In-Laws Talk, In-Laws Talk
Post: None

Newly Registered Users
View: New Users
Post: New Users

Registered Users
View: News and Announcements, Suggestion Box, Non-In-Laws Talk, In-Laws Talk
Post: News and Announcements (Reply Only), Suggestion Box, Non-In-Laws Talk, In-Laws Talk

So, what this does is create what is commonly referred to as a "honey pot" where the bees are spammers and the honey is the "New Users" forum.

Assume you are a spammer. You get through the robot questions and other hoops and now you're a "new" member (a good number of spammers won't make it this far, but a good number will). You see the forums and there is only one forum: New Users. You go to that one forum and post spam, spam, spam, and a bunch of porn just to top it off. Because other users who have finished the ENTIRE process (Registered Users above) can't see that New Users forum, the don't see the spam and porn. They're COMPLETELY sheltered from it.

The only people who would see the spam and porn would be other new users (Newly Registered Users above) and, more importantly, the Moderators. This allows the Moderators to delete the offending material and ban the user without the Registered Users of the forum being exposed to ANY of it.

In the end, what you might see as a wall to entry is actually more like a security checkpoint. And once you're on the other side of that checkpoint, you never have to worry about those who aren't.

Its worth going through the "hoops". :D I have definitly relieved stress due to this site. Its a secret place where i can go and say whats on my mind. No one....no one knows I am here. I made the mistake of not deleting cookies (2 years ago) and my husband saw that i was on here. I do that now and he has no idea I am here. He would have to sign up to find out if i was on here too. Its like I am hiding out with an assumed name. I feel safe to say anything I want. I also use a different search engine than he does. Its very helpful to me. Thank you moderators for being here.... :P
